Technical Question

I might be reasonably ok at helping to fix people, but I've got a bit of a computer problem I need some help with.....

I have an external hard drive which has got loads of files on that I need, but my computer has stopped recognising it and the device manager reports Error Code 10: Drive unable to start.

Has anyone got any ideas how I can get it working again?

Couple of potential options.... (oh - BTW - long-time reader (came here via either Random Reality or Nee Naw), first-time poster...)

Either open it up and put the drive itself into another caddy. It could be the USB<->IDE communication that is failing. I doubt that this is the problem, though.

More likely, it's inside the drive itself, which means you're potentially screwed. However (and I say this having never tried it), one option is to get the drive as cold as you can (I'm assured that this works). Freeze it for a while (day, maybe?)

It's hard to say for sure without knowing more details, but my basic plan would be to uninstall it, then reboot, then re-install it.

A few questions:

* What OS are you using? E.g. Windows XP Home?

* What type of drive is this? Make and model would be handy, but failing that just a general description like USB/SCSI.

If you can go along to the manufacturer's website, you may be able to get some updated driver files for it, and/or an explanation of what's caused this error.
